On September 1st, a 35-year-old man allegedly broke into four houses in Pasir Ris, Singapore, while citizens were occupied with the presidential election. He was spotted inside a residential unit with a black haversack and attempted to flee. Four individuals, including two domestic helpers and two men, tried to detain him but only managed to remove his haversack before he escaped. The haversack contained cash, foreign currencies, watches, clothing, and housebreaking tools.

The police were alerted at 8.55 pm, leading to an investigation that identified the suspect. He allegedly broke into three more houses in the Pasir Ris area. The police gathered evidence through CCTV footage and sent items from the haversack for DNA analysis at the Health Sciences Authority. After extensive efforts and ground inquiries, the suspect was arrested at Changi Airport Terminal 4 around 19 hours later, as he attempted to flee the country.

The four individuals who attempted to detain the suspect were praised by the police for their courage and public-spirited actions, as they helped identify the suspect. They were presented with the Public Spiritedness Award by the Bedok Police Division.
